Burping may be caused by eating or drinking which causes you to swallow air (called 'aerophagia' in medical terms). Burps are also caused by ingesting carbonated beverages, which is simply a release of the carbon dioxide in the drink itself. Also, acid reflux disease and food poisining can cause burping.
The sound of burping is caused by the vibration of the esophageal sphincter (called the 'cardia') as the gas passes through it.
