This is my first laptop and I got it used off Ebay and it works like a truck, its GREAT, but the monitor I have to position just so in order to see it. It's either bright at bottom/dark at top or too bright if I have it straight up. Last night I watched a DVD on it and it was SO shadowy, are laptops just like this or is it mine? Yes I've played with the brightness 100 times, no luck.

Thanks a lot - all answers welcome.

The screen may have a glare filter built into the monitor already. It is perfectly normal. What sucks the most is that you have reposition it at different angles.

My IBM 770 Laptop has a wonderful display. I bought it from a Blind man for $100 and it came with "WinEyes" so people with bad/no eyesight can use it.
My IBM iSeries Laptop I also bought used over the Inet. It was an off lease computer and the display is not the greatest in the world. Now, the top is real tight to open and as a result the plastic has cracked at the hinge corners. About a year ago I turned it on and the display was super dim and sometimes look like the computers on "Matrix". I found that a slap on the Right Back of the Screen fix it. Not real hard, but, firmly. It is interesting and I not have to do often. Plus it always gets a laugh from my friends. They tell people; "If, you have computer problems, just let him slap it around some and it will work"!

Er, if you're laptop runs like a truck, then you must have bought the wrong thing.

Check your power settings. Usually a laptop has a small icon in the bottom right corner of the screen which sets the power level for various parts of the laptop. There should be a setting for the screen brightness for when you're running on batteries and when you're using the AC cord.
Laptop monitors aren't as good as the desktop ones because the desktop ones have better lighting and don't have to worry about power saving.

Another reason for shadows might be that you've been watching movies with a lot of shady characters in it.

Yeah, that's just how laptops are. But it does seem to work better when the laptop is plugged in.
