How do you slip away?

I don't. I like it when people do the talking. I just sit there and nod my head and let who ever have a great time. I like making people happy and sometimes, just listening is all it takes.

If I truly can't break away then it becomes automatic...I just zone out. People tell me I have a bad memory because of it but I can't help myself. I am surrounded all the time by people who talk too much. Of course, I generally listen very well if it's an important issue for someone but it seems so many just like to hear the sound of their own voice and/or are uncomfortable with silence.

Be firm. They are being firm with you by holding you there and talking to you even though you show signs you want to leave. That's a passive way of bullying someone. Being overly nice. If it's an adult, they should be aware of indications you do not want or are not able to stay and listen to what they have to say. Someone has to be an adult.

All of the above suggestions are worth a try - but good luck because experienced motor mouths are hip to those tricks and seem to brush those excuses aside w/ ease. If you find a fool proof answer please let me know.
