There is a red headed woodpecker in my back yard pecking at a hole in a tree while a wren flits back and forth chirping. Are wrens and woodpeckers enemies?

They are not enemies. The woodpecker may be pecking a tree where the wren has a nest started.

Not that I know of. However, I understand some woodpeckers are aggressive birds. It could be that the wren wants that hole the woodpecker is pecking at for a nest.
