"The renegade cleric Muqtada al-Sadr urged the Iraqi army and police to stop cooperating with the United States and told his guerrilla fighters to concentrate on pushing American forces out of the country, according to a statement issued Sunday.
The statement, stamped with al-Sadr's official seal, was distributed in the Shiite holy city of Najaf on Sunday — a day before a large demonstration there, called for by al-Sadr, to mark the fourth anniversary of the fall of Baghdad.
"You, the Iraqi army and police forces, don't walk alongside the occupiers, because they are your archenemy," "

nepasmoker: Don't split hairs. You know what I was getting at. This is a significant turn of events, a call that could significantly shift the dynamics of this ordeal, more than most, therefore the term "new" which I chose to use is more than justified.

No i don't see a war on cards. There are a few reasons to justify my point. The first point is that the policy of US against iraq was a big failure and it wont do anything similar too early.
The second point is that iran is also a neuclear capable country and US ll do well to notice this. Any nuclear involvement now may result in total damage.
So there's already lot of pressure and this should be sufficient to prevent any war plans of US.

Quite frankly, I think America was doomed years ago. This latest claim is but a continuation of it.
Think of it this way - if the troops remain we are screwed, if they are withdrawn we are screwed.
If they stay, the violence continues in Iraq. If we pull them out, they could (and probably will) see it as a sign of weakness.... and make 9/11 pale by comparison.
To avoid massive conflict, We will need to work out an agreement, and let them know that the whole thing was the mistake of our electing an insane leader. It would also go a long way if we promise to pay for rebuilding ( and KEEP the promise this time - unlike the promise we made to Afganis in the 1980's), which would be less than what it's costing us now.
UNFORTUNATELY, to reach an agreement with them, we must first understand and respect them - something which seems to be an alein concept to most Americans.

I just fear for our troops. They are at awful odds already. This al-Sadr is a fool. He doesn't seem to understand,(OR maybe he does) that we are there to help STOP the internal fighting these "holy men" love to keep stirring up! If they would just keep their followers calm and go about living life as normal human beings, our troops could leave. Besides, the last thing we want is the radical Islam to take over more than it already has.

Maybe a planned proxy war by Iran with the US by supplying Jaish al Mahdi just like they helped Hezbollah over the summer against Israel.

It's not the 1st time he asked for a Jihad against U.S. forces. His timing couldn't be more perfect...with the outcry for pulling out troops this is the perfect time..because if we leave they will declare victory and the bloodletting will become a normal way of life in other western worlds as Muslims begin to rethink their neutrality and begin to form small and large factions in the U.S. and the U.E.

The war has already begun. Read the story a little closer, you'll find out that he wants all fire power directed towards the US instead of their citizens.

We attacked Sadr. That's what the """Surge"""" was all about.
He was content to wait us out and assume power when we left, but Bush wouldn't have that and attacked him.

it's very obvious they don't want america's occupation and never asked for it. Maybe they need to push the soldiers out and let them settle their differences themselves. We need to bring our soldiers home and who really cares about winning a war that will never have a "WINNER" because in this case........ no one wins, everyone's a looser
