I'm going to be driving from Philly to Los Angeles this summer and want to see the country. From strange things (largest ball of yard) to historical places to just cool places to stop. So far in my journey I will be stopping in the Chicago area to visit some family. Let me know where you think I should stop. Also, I don't plan on staying in one place too long (a few hours at the most) - the stops are more of a break in driving than anything else.

Try to avoid fast food restaurants on your journey and take the time to sample the numerous independently owned restaurants you will find. For example in Chicago do ask your family where is the best deep dish pizza. Tasting the flavors of local food as you drive across America will give you a better appreciation of the people that live there. These will be great little memories you will always have. Memories of meals enjoyed in chain restaurants will not be as vivid.

The memorial at the federal building in Oklahoma City - a moment in history that made the world stand still.

Absolutely stop here for an experience you will never forget. We spent about two hours here on our trip from the west coast. The Memorial Museum takes visitors on a chronological, self-guided tour through the story of April 19, 1995, and the days, weeks, months and years that followed the bombing of Oklahoma City's Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. This is the story of one of the largest terrorist attacks on American soil. The story is told in chapters, and takes visitors through this historical event beginning early morning April 19, 1995, and ending with a message of hope for today.

The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum was created to honor those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever by the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The Memorial and Museum are dedicated to educating visitors about the impact of violence, informing about events surrounding the bombing, and inspiring hope and healing through lessons learned by those affected.

Not that you can hit all these, but my favs from cross country trip were

Badlands, SD

Devil's Tower, Wyoming (very, strange, huge, and amazing)

Glacier Park, Montana (travel "Going to the Sun" road up and up and up)

US highway 1(coastal highway) California AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL!

Yosemite Park, California

Mesa Verde (ancient cliff dwellings) Colorado, very very cool

I'd pass up the big ball of yarn and catch as many national parks as possible, I really had no idea how beautiful this country was until I saw it for myself.
