Why is the word "America" refers most times only the USA when we use it? Even though there are all these other states which belong to America like Brazil, Peru, Columbia etc.
Is it just a short form for United States of America (USA)?
Is it arrogance like we think that only the USA really matters if we speak of America. Or, or, or?
What do you think?
And do you think it is right to use the word America, while its also a continent and also includes other contries?
Would it be the same if we all time we talk forexample about China and would use the word Asia for China? Or if we talk about Spain and use the word Europe? Would it be the same or would there be a difference?
If there would be no difference, is it really okay to use the name of a continent only for one state like it represents all other?
And now I am curious about your opinions.

Oh I didnt mean to discuss the name "United States of America". It says "of America" so the thing the things I was saying are not refering to that name just to only using "America". ;)

I dont think anyone means to be arrogant, I just want to ask for your opinions. I also used America pretty often while speaking about the USA, but I just thought about that.

I think this happens just because calling someone a "United-Statesian" sounds ridiculous. I don't think it's deliberately insulting.
But technically you're right, there are two continents full of "Americans."

Reality...it is tough sometimes but the better you can see and deal with it the better.
If you want to have a semantic conversation about what America should be called...well I guess that is fine as long as you understand that you are discussing semantics.
America has earned the right to be called "America" or the US of America or whatever else we want to call ourselves.
If however you feel that we ALL should be one America, then I am sure the government of America would consider your application to become a new state within America.
Anyway, we are America and I am an American and the world knows exactly what that means...
It is interesting that apparently you don't.

well, the names 'north america' and 'south america' are pretty arbitrary, and bestowed by europeans. no kidding there are people besides Americans on the two continents. It's just short for 'citizen of the United States of America.'
Give us a break. It's a pretty unwieldy country name. You can have brazilians, peruvians, colombians, mexicans, canadians. What would you have us call ourselves?????
No one thinks calling us americans means we think we represent all others. how silly. most americans couldn't find south america on a globe.

I aid your thought, but i believe that the USA claim that they're "all that", but they're not; they comfort themselves by saying that they're the ultimate power while they are falling peice by peice...i don't think america is supposed to be USA alone as known, because that would be kind of an insult to the other countries...and USA believe they represent the whole American continent by saying that they are America is wrong, they are giving a bad reputation to all the AMERICANS ON THE AMERICAN CONTINENT, and not the country

there is no other option for "american". there's brazilian, peruvian, mexican, etc. but there's no usa-er or usa-an ?
even back in the days of ussr, if you don't want to say russian, you can call the person a soviet.
since the only name for the people is american, the country is referred to by the same name.
besides, there's no overwhelming number of brazilians wanting to be called american. so it's ok.

The be conscious "dogs" has many makes use of in speech; to place some one down, to correctly known somebody as an equivalent, or perhaps to get exhilaration from somebody for his understanding. So, don't be disillusioned. i used to be referred to as "hoss" lots of the time. evaluate the source!

If you're from North America, you can say you're North American,or use your nation's name. However if you're a Canadian, whose citizens have lots of American Ancestors, then you can use American/Canadian, or North American.
If you're from South America, then you say I'm South American. It's as simple as that.

We are the only ones with AMERICA in our nations title, henceforth, we call ourselves Americans. The Brazilians call them selves Brazilians, the Canadians, Canadians, Peruvians, Peruvians, so on. Get it?

Our usage of the term "America" is reinforced by Mexicans, Canadians, Europeans, and a lot of immigrants ("I want to come to America"). It is not just "us".
Very funny, Shrink.
