That would have to be Lakers vs Celtics (teams), Russell vs Chamberlain or Bird vs Magic (players).

The Lakers and Celtics faced each other in the NBA finals ten times, with the Celtics winning the first 8, then the Lakers FINALLY winning in 1985, and another in 87.

Russell vs Chamberlain are THE individual rivals non pareil. Chamberlain would dominate the stat box, but Russell's Celtics would win. Interestingly, it was Chamberlain's 1967 Philadelphia 76ers who would finally break Russell and the Celtics' string of 8 straight championships - the only time Chamberlain would defeat Russell in the playoffs.

Bird and Magic were rivals even before coming into the NBA, having faced each other in the 1979 NCAA Championship, with Magic's Michigan State Spartans beating Bird's Indiana State Sycamores. Both came in and revitalized their teams - Magic to the Lakers, and Larry to the Celtics. When the two teams met in 1984, it was a hard fought, bitter 7 game series won by Boston. The next year, the Lakers won. In 1987 Magic's baby-baby-baby skyhook won game 4 for the Lakers, eventually winning the championship.

Bulls vs. Pistons has been a huge rivalry during and since the Jordan era. They can play eachother 3 or 4 times a year plus the Eastern Conference playoffs. Lakers vs. Celtics was good back in the day, but they only could meet 2 times a season then the finals. And the Celtics have sucked for a decade.

Past:
lakers vs. celtics
from the russell/ chamberlain era to the bird/ magic era

Recent Past:
lakers vs. Kings (or should i say queens?)
Kobe & Shaq vs. C-Webb & Floppy Divac & company

Present:
Intriguing: Heat & Lakers
Although this might not be a real rivalry in every sense, the NBA still thinks the Kobe vs. Shaq thing will sell and so far for the past 3 years, it has been selling well...people have been biting into the rivalry/ grudge storyline that the NBA is trying to hype as evidenced by the NBA's preference to market heat vs. lakers every christmas day for the past 3 years.

Worth watching rivalry:
Mavs vs. Suns
They have split the season series among them and have shown that they both can play each other well on any given night, this will definitely be worth watching come playoffs time.

Most compelling rivalry:
Heat vs. Mavs

If the heat somehow pull it off and make it to the finals for a 2nd straight season, then this will be the rivalry of the year!!!

Excellent story line: Revenge vs. Repeat!!!

When the Celts were always good, the big game to watch was with the other great team the Lakers. Lots of match ups through the years with Russell, Kareem, Magic, Cowens, Mchale, Jo Jo. Havlicek, to name a few.
