If you don't see sound jacks in the back the system probably didn't come with a sound card (as others have indicated).
Instead of buying a sound card and having to pay someone to put it in, I've seen several USB sound devices which just plug in to your USB jack (assuming your new pc has one). SO you don't have to open up the computer to install anything.

It must not happen with the company like Compaq but you can buy speakers, mic & a sound card your problem can be solved by yourself Insert the sound card on the mother board attach speakers to the sound card appropriate port give power to your speakers if required install the drivers if not detected by win xp, you are done , enjoy music now.

Check your manual. If you don't have a manual, look in the back off the computer. There might be at least 3 1/8th inch jacks in the back (they're the same size jacks like the kind used in walkmans/mp3 players). The jacks might be multicoloured (usually the lime green one is for output).
If your particular computer does not have a built-in soundcard on the motherboard, you'll have to buy a PCI one. Click on the link below for examples. (Tiger Direct also has a Canadian site at tigerdirect.ca if you're from Canada.)

Should be sound card exit from rear - some systems use output from the monitor - Do you have system sounds -- like when you boot up, the windows chimes maybe the previous owner removed the sound card ? Should be three plugins on the back one for speakers one for headset and one for microphone all in the sound card.

It seems that it did not carry a sound card or the audio is not integrated on board. You can buy any ISA sound card and install into your computer. Try on ebay to find the ISA sound card.

i'm sure its a colored light green port you'll find at the back. you just have to look harder. and if i'm not mistaken, you'll find also at the front, just have to flip the cover open.
if it really doesn't have any, buy a sound card and mount it on your computer. run the driver for it and you're done!
good luck!

I have never heard(no pun intended) of a computer without a soundboard. Look at the back of your computer.
