Even from early times human beings are curious about the origin of the universe, solar system, earth and its end. They have been trying to find life other than on earth. They have been trying to reason out why and how the universe and the bodies in it formed?

It is just curiosity that makes humans explore space

As the late astronomer Carl Sagan once wrote, "We make our world significant by the courage of our questions and by the depth of our answers." Since its inception in 1958, NASA has been a leading force in scientific research in both Earth and space science. NASA research serves the public interest - and nurtures human curiosity - by exploring the universe's deepest mysteries and some of the most pressing scientific problems on Earth. By seeking to understand the solar system, our own planet, and the origins of life, NASA addresses some of the most fundamental questions about existence. But there are practical benefits, too: NASA research allows for advances in science and technology that improve the quality of life on Earth. Advances in Earth observation, for example, allow scientists to monitor changes in Earth's climate and ocean circulation, forecast the weather and navigate ships and planes. Other technologies developed by NASA have helped create a network of instant global communications indispensable to modern life.

If humans want their species to survive, you know in the long term, we MUST create colonies, either on other worlds or in space satations. Right now all of our eggs are in one basket, the planet earth. If a big nasty asteroid comes along and splats into our home, it could erase mankind for all eternity. Even if this doesn't happen, we will use up all our natural resources eventually, we are well on our way to wiping ourselves out. Only by colonizing space will we have a chance to survive. For those who say (all too frequently) "We need to fix our problems here on earth before we go out into space" You aren't thinking the problem through.... WE ARE NEVER GOING TO BE ABLE TO FIX OUR PROBLEMS HERE ON EARTH!!! THEY ARE JUST GOING TO GET WORSE!! Now is the time while we have the resources and the ability to seed the galaxy with our genes before its too late for us..... on the other hand, homo sapiens is generally stupid, petty and quick to fight, regardless of the consequences, so maybe our species doesn't deserve to survive.... what do you think?

A lot of Human benefits - a few being technological advancements, new planetary colonies so we reduce the starin we are putting on the Earth's resources right now, understanding who we are as a people and where we fit in with the universe, our history as a species and what our specific origins were (as god is not a reliable source these days)
