I am buying a barebones kit and it comes with an AMD 64 X2 processor. It says that it does not come with a fan which i understand... but does that mean it also does not come with a heatsink?

The CPU fans and heatsink are sold together, so you don't need to buy them separately.

At Tigerdirect.com, look under 'Cooling Devices' | 'CPU Fans' and read the reviews for the CPU fans to decide on which one to get.

OEM processors are just bare processors in a tray. It is the Retail Processor in a Box that comes complete with the heatsink fan (HSF). You will have to purchase the HSF separately, but you have the option to buy a stock HSF, a high performance HSF or a low noise HSF.

Karz is correct. "OEM" processors do not come with a heatsink or fan, while "Retail" processors usually do.

Normally, I have found it is less expensive to buy a "Retail" CPU than to buy an "OEM" CPU and separate heatsink/fan. Also, most of the "Retail" CPU's will have a longer warranty than "OEM" CPU's.
