Can't you hang out with both "groups"?
I mean, obviously they would be mad at you, but maybe you can make things better by hanging out with your old friends and new friends.

Get a life. If the "Preppy" girls were your friends they'd embrace your entire life, not just your kissing up to them, and if your other group of friends were your friends they'd try to accept whatever decision you make. I don't think you have the ability to actually make friends, I think you hang with whatever group will have you, and when a more "popular" group comes along you go that direction. By the way, "popular" means liked by the majority, not envied by the majority, so if the other groups don't like the "preppy" group, but envy them, it doesn't make them popular, just jealousy inducing. Good Luck if you ever need any real help. You'll probably have trouble finding true friends.

Your old friends feel like you've ditched them when something better came along. If you care about them, save some time for them to hang out and explain to them that you still want to be their friend. The problem is you've changed social groups and the one you have joined can't be joined by your old friends. From personal experience, here is where you are going to lose friends. If you continue in one group, you'll lose the other. As time goes on, the groups travel on separate paths. Decide who your real friends are.

Ohh how nice, ditching your friends to hang out with the popular kids. Seriously, that's a pretty bitchy thing to do.
