The Answer is Grady Sizemore. several managers in the MLB have stated that Sizemore is the Best overall player in all of baseball. and as for age is young at 25 and this year is the first player in AL history to hit a Home Run in the first 3 games of the season. 3rd to do it in all of MLB. he plays his heart out every day, lead all of baseball in extra base hits last season (92), runs scored (134) along tied for the lead in doubles (53) second in the AL with 11 triples along with being a gold glove candidate every year in a league with Tori Hunter, Vernon Wells and now Ichiro in CF
(and as a Cleveland fan that lives in the town that Jim Thome lived in while playing for Cleveland) Thome is NOT a nice person he was a snob in stores to any ones standards, and after games when other players where signing autographs he would just walk out and not sign anything.

I would build my team around jose reyes. He is only 23 years old and one if not the best short stops this year. He is improving every year. It would be good to have him because he could help your team longer, since he is 23. He is a great defensive player. He is a great at leading off and has the speed to turn doubles into triples. He led the majors in triples with 17 each of the last two seasons .He is a great all- around player.

I would choose either Reyes or Hanley Ramirez. Both are very young and fill one of the most important spots. Teams that are strong up the middle usually have a chance to do well and both these guys provide great gloves and incredible offensive skills....they have the ability to create offense with power and speed, a rare combination. Power hitters such a Pujols are great but if the table isnt set you wont win a lot of ballgames with solo blasts or alter the way a team pitches to the power. Speed is distracting both for the pitcher and fielders so it alters a ballgame more. Plus their defense makes the pitchers on their teams better.

Fun question.
If I could choose any player in baseball, I'd take Joe Mauer. He's the only AL catcher to ever win a batting title, and he's a gifted catcher. Good catchers are so rare, and thus a guy like Mauer (or McCann in Atlanta) are extremely valuable. Grady Sizemore would be another great choice, though I worry about him crashing into a CF fence. Jose Reyes and David Wright are both young, and they're both extremely talented players. If I had to choose one, I'd grab Wright, but it's a toss-up.
Finally, I don't understand all these people choosing guys on the wrong side of 30. If I'm starting a franchise, I'd take guys who are lot younger than Jeter or Ichiro or Jason Giambi.

Derek Jeter. He's a leader, great in-fielder with offensive power. He can lead the team at the bottom of the 9th to victory.
Jason Giambi. A slugging power house. He is also an honorable man admitting to his steroid problem then coming back from it even stronger.
Alex Rodriguez. A fantastic in-fielder. A slugger that also knows how to play small ball. He's coming through in the clutch, too.
Wait a minute...I don't have to start a new franchise. Go Yankees!!!

In baseball, you don't really build a team around players, because it's predominately an individual sport.
If you're talking about the best player to have to start a franchise, most people would probably tell you Albert Pujols.
