What impressed me most was the man's fortitude. Those British sailors defamed their country after nothing more than a few threats, and we're supposed to consider them heroes.

It appears that Colonel William Crawford did indeed have a very unpleasant death.

In truth, I really think you need to read more history and find out about man's in humanity to man.

For example, during a reasonably recent passage of history, research what happened:
During Stalins reign of terror in Russia/USSR
What Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge did in Cambodia
and
What happened to the prisoners in both the Nazi and Japanese camps during World War 2.
1994 Rwanda Genocide when thousands were killed on the first day, and more than 800,000 were slaughtered over a period of three months.

Any time in history will give examples of the lengths man will go to, to inflict pain and suffering on his fellow man.

The lynching of Jesse Washington in Waco, Texas in 1916 would be a competitor. It was so brutal it was known as "The Waco Horror".

Here are some articles on it:

Was it worse than hanging, drawing and quartering? Being half hanged, then cut down whilst still alive, your stomach cut open and your entrails pulled out and burned in front of you. Ugh...doesn't bear thinking about. What a charming lot our ancestors were!

I've got to agree with rdenig_m and Elizabeth.

Unfortunately, humans have purposely caused each other great pain and harm since the beginning of time.
