If the ants are very small, they are probably NOT carpenter ants, since those are at least 1/4" long. There is a product which works well to kill ants; it is a clear sticky syrup (a mixture of sugar, water, and borax) which is toxic to ants but harmless to humans and pets. You put about a teaspoonful on a flat jar lid in places either indoors or outdoors where you see ants crawling. They eat it, and bring it back to the nest, where it gets fed to the Queen of the ant colony. Once the queen dies, the colony disappears.
The product comes in a plastic squeeze bottle, and is made under various brand names. The one I have is made by Safer's, but other companies make it, too. Just ask at the hardware store or garden center, and they will know what you need.

Call a professional Pest Control company.
If you use any of the home remedies listed above, you will scatter the ants and disrupt their scent trails. This might seem like it works but, they have just moved to a different part of the house.
Also, you will only kill the ants that you see and the colony will still continue to grow and they WILL come back.
I do not believe they are carpenter ants, unless you have seen them over the winter.
Regardless of the type of ants, call a professional.

Sounds like carpenter ants which can be nearly as bad a termites. You should call an exterminator. They are interested in wood, so keeping the place clean wont help.

From what I've heard, ants can't stand salt. Try and sprinkle some around the affected areas and see what happens. If that doesn't work, you might need to contact an insect exterminator.
