I'm going to be in Houston for a few days and I'm wondering if there is somewhere, either on the coast or inland, within day trip distance that would have good snorkelling.

Not unless you want to go to Corpus Christy or South Padre Island, there is nothing in Galveston.

The closest body of water is the Gulf of Mexico in Galveston. Good luck seeing anything in the water. It's always brown and nasty. Basically no water around Houston is clean. My best advice is to stay out of this hell hole of a town they call Houston.

No. The water's cloudy and often has tarballs in it from the ship channel.
