Pretty much. You could also send a demo cd/tape around any local promoters, though I'd advise caution if one of them asks you to sign anything.

Do 3 hand stands, have a bowl of cereal, run for 3.34 meters and shout "HOLLAAAAA" and the A and R guys will come running.....that just shows how random it is to get a gig! But a more useful answer is: 1) send your demo to the bars you interested in...make sure you attach a photo of you band, your set up (eg 4 piece etc) and how long a set you can do...its also better to go in person as many bars dont listen to stuff that comes in the mail. 2) sign up to a music promotion company on the net. 3) Go to gig nights in small bars where the bands usually hang around after, ask them or someone who works there who the promoter is and go give them your demo. Remember....always carry around a "band pack" which should include a demo, your myspace address (if you have one), a photo of the and, a bit about the band AND DONT FORGET YOUR CONTACT DETAILS...my friend spent the whole weekend handing out demo packs and at the end of it all realised that he didnt inlcude his contacts??? Dumb ass lol...good luck

1) You could get an agent to book gigs for you. The downpoint to this is that they require commission, and after a while they get lazy and don't bother booking you any more.

2) You could phone the bars and find out if they want a singer to sing for them, however more often than not they don't, but maybe you'll get lucky.

3) You could go to open mic nights at various bars and sing at them - you won't get paid, but you will get your name out there. If they like you then perhaps they'll ask you to come back for a paid night, especially if you get talking to the people who run the show

4) Make friends with other musicians! If they get a gig somewhere and need someone to support them, or perhaps even if their singer is ill or can't do the gig then they could call you. It's vital to have other contacts within the music scene.

Yep, that is pretty much the deal. It is a good idea to do a little research. Check with local government, do you need a permit or license to entertain for money? Are you copyrighting your original songs correctly? Make a list of local places you want to play, and get them some information about you. A list of your songs, or a short demo tape. Or sit down with a bar manager to learn their requirements for your performance. An audition, or tryouts just for tips? Check with other artists in your area to see what they are doing to get gigs. Call a local college see if you can perform in their student union hall. Call a wedding planner or service to see if they have any need for your service. Print cards or flyers to give to anyone who seems interested. If you are in an area that I have much knowledge about, I would be happy to give you more tips. Good Luck.
