does each guitar virtuoso like steve vai and joe satriani have one song that defines their sound, or are they so talented that every song is their signature sound? i tend to agree with the latter, but it does seem like certain songs are unmistakable for each artist. like for instance, vai's would be for the love of god, satch's would be the summer song, eric johnson's would be cliffs of dover, and so on. does that sound right? agree, disagree?

I agree partially. I can often tell who is playing the guitar simply by the sound of it (I'm a guitarist too), but I heard one guy play and he sounded EXACTLY like Walter Trout, only it was NOT Walter Trout - just the same sound, so he was probably using a Stratocaster and a Mesa Boogie amp. Certain guitar players do seem to have a signature sound, but look all the material that Joe Walsh has put out - his sound has changed over time. Jimi Hendrix used a Gibson Flying V on "Rainbow Bridge", so even Hendrix's sound didn't stay the same. I like to use different guitars and amps but that is more for experimentation, and I am looking for something that I like, and will stay with for a while. Great question, btw!

It think that the sound is linked with their style of playing. If you like Steve Vai then Listen to "You are what you is" by Frank Zappa. There is some really great guitar solos on that album.

i think every guitarist makes his or her own Signature sound , I can tell a Jimi Hendrix instrumental from a Page or Van Halen, or Pete Townsend.. well you know... cant you too?
