I help people with this every day. Most problems stem from negative attitudes. If it were easy to just become positive then all the worlds problems would be solved in a single bound.
So, how? Some quick guild lines:
1/ Keep a diary / Journal - put in all your successes, achievements and anything fun. Do not enter anything else.
2/ Read it daily
3/ Get rid of anyone from your life that you respond to in a negative way. (once you have built a very positive view of life, you can reform those relationships)
4/ Re-evaluate all those things you look upon as negative - what is the so good thing about them. Take tax- what is the good thing about paying tax - well I am contributing to:
Schools - so future generations will have the marvels experience of learning.
Hospitals - Wow - I can contribute to helping people get better.
Social welfare - I can help those in need fight there way out - oh and how that was so impotent to my mum and family when i was growing up.
Notice - I never put qualifiers on however did illustrate.
Keep it all in your journal
5/ Any mistakes - list then against then - what is i learn - and - how will I deal with that in future. It is a fool who does the something over and over again expecting a different outcome; it is a wise person who learns and changes.
6/ each day - walk in the fresh air.
7/ Treat yourself each day fro being the unique person you are.
8/ each day - some music and some humour

Forget the books. Instead of thinking of the glass half empty think of it as half full. The world does not revolve around you. You are only part of the larger picture. A smile is just a frown turned upside down. You can't expect to be happy after reading a book. You have to be first happy with yourself. Thinking positive is only a matter of finding the good in what is going on around you & overlooking the bad.

One idea to help is to pick something small you can improve on today. Just one thing! Make a small improvement in that area. Like, patience, courteousness, etc. and write it down, and try to improve yourself in that one area for a whole day. then pick something else the next day, the key is to improve on something everyday, ever so slightly. We are our happiest when we accomplish something, no matter how small. so if you are constantly improving yourself, you will be happier, ie have a better attitude.

Tho life may slam me, beat me, defame me, tear out my heart, take all I have, and leave me pennyless, unsheltered and alone. I know there's nothing I cannot endure. The sun will rise on a new day, with a promise of a tomorrow, and the hope for a better life. It may not be what I wanted, it is what it is, a gift of life, it's the only one I have. But it's mine.

Who needs books? The way you feel is all in the mind. If you put yourself to feeling good, you will feel good.
