it's not easy to perfectly bend a piece of metal rod e.g. copper by hand as you might end up with kinks along it's length - so is there a tool that enables smooth perfect bends to be formed along the entire length of a copper rod, and if so where could i purchase one?

the copper rod i would use would only be about 4 mm in dia

For something that small I would go to your hobby shop, they should have a rod bending tool there that is the right size. One used for plumbing is going to be to large and not going to give you the results you want. These small benders are used a lot in model railroading, Model marine and model engineering.

Use a pipe or conduit bender. For something as thick a 7/8" you might want to anneal the rods at the bends, (heat and slow cool), with a torch before bending. You would also be well advised to drill any holes in the section to be bent AFTER you do the bending. It would be relatively easy to make a jig to hold the bent pieces together so the finished holes will all line up.

My husband has this plumbing tool that goes inside the piece of copper pipe. It is solid at each end but there is a section of about 18 inches in the middle that is like a coil. You heat the copper pipe so it is pliable and then you can bend it to the shape you want.

Clamp a pipe (with your desired radius on the outside dimension) down to your work surface. Use a rubber mallet to bend your copper rod around the pipe to get your radius. I suggest a rubber mallet so you do not leave hammer marks, if you do not want them.

You can even purchase a tube bending tool at your local hardware.

Why not just get copper tubing? It bends easily and stays in position. http://www.plumbingsupply.com/coppertubing.html
