It's very possible to learn to sing well. You just need to know the right methods. Learn here https://tr.im/improveyourvoice

Singing teachers will cost money and can be expensive so they're not for everyone. Singing can be learned so it's not an "either you have it or you don't" kind of thing.

Whether you sound like crap or you're decent, I recommend this singing course. It's one of the best methods to learn to sing well in a short amount of time. It's all about using efficient techniques that work.

You may be trying to sing in a register that isn't really in your range. The biggest culprit is trying to sing higher than you actually have the ability to do.

My daughter can sing along with a song and do really well. She doesn't have the ability to hear herself, and sings out of key when she sings alone. Painfully out of key. Could also be your problem.

If you cup your hand around one ear, kinda like making your ear larger, you can hear yourself better. If you can't afford voice lessons, then you can try to teach yourself to hear the note, and sing it back, using that method. Just start with a middle C and work one note at a time up trying to match it.

Just remember, even if you never learn to sing in tune, sing for the sheer joy of it anyway. Even if it's when you're alone. I think the worst thing people do is to not sing aloud..because they're afraid they don't sound good. There is nothing more joyful than singing..even if you do it alone where no one can criticize.

Good luck!!
