Hey Nummy - The World Series is a baseball term.
Major League Baseball has such an international culture that it should be called the World Series. The best players from all over the world play baseball in the US. All the scrubs that can't make it in MLB go elsewhere to play. Show me a team outside of the US that can beat the Yankees in a 7 game series then you might have a valid point.

So many wrong answers here!
The first World Series (in baseball, not football) was played in 1903, and at that time, the United States WAS the only nation on earth that played professional baseball. So at the time, the name was correct and proper. The series was NOT sponsored by any newspaper.
Since that time, many other nations have begun playing professional baseball too, but the name of the original "World Series" stuck, due to tradition.

You are a big sports fan, right? The World Series is Major League Baseball, not football. The National Football League has the Superbowl.

Firstly, the World Series refers to baseball, not football and secondly, the USA is not the only country taking part. In any event, it wouldn't matter if they were because the series takes its name from a now defunct newspaper called "The World" which sponsored the first series.

The World Series is for baseball, not football. The football championship is called the Super Bowl.
And I think it's pretty ridiculous to call it the WORLD series too. The only truly global competition that has "world" in its name is the World Cup for football/soccer.

It's not football, it's baseball, and it's because the series was originally sponsored by a newspaper called the World, thus it was "The World's Series."

A quick visit to the Urban Myth site snopes.com will show that the "World Series" has nothing to do with the name of a newspaper.

I've wondered that. I guess if Americans are the only ones who play baseball, the winners of their competition are effectively the best in the world by default
