The playoffs tend to be a lot more defensive games. Not always, but even more than regular season. You concentrate on a strategy to shut down the scoring of the opposition. If that is the style of play, penalty killing and power plays become extremely important, as if you are playing defense all the time, the pp is one of the times you might be looking to score. As for Vancouver, they are playing Dallas in the first round, another defensive team and all their match-ups this year have had a final score of 2-1. But Vancouver's goalie is hotter, as is their scoring. So look to them to win, and then anything can happen in round two.

I think it's very important. A team might go on the powerplay 4-5 times per game and since the Stars and the Canucks don't score much, the timely powerplay goal might decide the game. The Canucks will clear the puck faster than you can say "crap" but I agree, they sometimes take too many stupid penalties.

The PK is as important as the PP. Because when you are down a man, you run the risk of allowing a goal, because you are shorthanded. Now, if your team is very disciplined, and do not commit to many penalties, you have a better chance of winning the game. Even worse is if you are down 2 men.

penalty killing is incredibly important because a lot of teams like the Sabres or the Red Wings are very dangerous on the power play. thats how the games are decided in the playoffs most of the time.

I agree that penalty killing is a critical part of a team's success in the playoffs. But I'll also agree in that staying out of the box is the best penalty killing measure a team can take. That's why I like teams like the Devils, Wild and Red Wings...they play good defense without having to take needless penalties.

WHATS MORE IMPORTANT
IS YOUR POWER PLAY.
YOU HAVE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR OPPORTUNITIES AND PRODUCE MORE POINTS THEN YOU GIVE UP THROUGH TAKING PENALTIES.
GO SENSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!
