The plate covering the external vent of our cooker,has come away and a small bird has got in.We've seen fly in and out,so we think it must be nesting ,the noise it makes is off putting,to say the least.I'm also concerned to the damage it may cause to the air vent and the bird may get into the kitchen. Any humane ideas to evict our unwanted guest{s}

Ah, I had this same thing when I bought my townhouse! Only there were babies in it! As soon as I was sure all the babies were gone, I took the cover off and cleaned the duct out. I used a shop vac to get the stuff from way back inside. After the nesting material was gone, to prevent other little beasties or birdies from taking up residence, I placed a small piece of screening over the hole before putting the cover back on.

I would think if you are able to detect that there are no eggs or babies, go ahead and remove the cover and pull all the stuff out and then recap it using some screening as I did. If there are babies or eggs, I would leave it alone if you are able to, but if there are none, the bird will find a new area to take up nesting. The screen will also help keep out some of the smaller creepy crawlies too, like water bugs or wasps. Good luck!

Turn the extract fan on full speed to deter it! Then fit a gravity flap or a grille over the opening. Make sure there are no young birds or eggs in the nest first.

Sneaky Mynas, they disrupt the peaceful activities of the other birds during chow down time and they think they own the place, they also have a shrill call bordering on cheeky and obnoxious. My two Blackbirds don't trust them and the Sparrows and Starlings keep right out of their way.
