It depends on how this education is given. When there's taught there's only on true religion, prayers in the classroom and things like that, I think this is not a good idea. This leads to indoctrination, and on the other hand to a lot of resistance from people who don't appreciate this.
What I do appreciate is general religions education, in which is taught about the most know religions, and their histories in general sense, so everybody learns to see theirs and others religion, or non-religion, in another and global context.

Seperation of church and state, religion is something that should be taught by parents, if religious education were to be made compulsory, my kids would be homeschooled so damned fast it would be ridiculous.

Which religion? The major religions in USA can't even agree whether god/God is a "unity" or a "trinity", so it's not as there's a lot of common basics.

Many families do make it compulsory for their own children.

it was compulsory when I was at school, and there were no alternatives offered, it was the Creation story and that was it.
I have two children of my own now and the idea of schools indoctrinating them at such an early age makes me very angry. Children are so eager to please adults, that whatever you tell them, they will willingly accept as truth, so it seems very wrong to me, to start 'educating' them at the age of four years old about religion and Biblical teachings without offering them alternative theories.

...................Preambles .............
....... ...........of the States..........

It appears that each of us has forgotten what we have learned in school, what our founding fathers wanted each of us to remember and what each state has written as their preamble.........
For all that have forgotten what we have been taught about the very foundation of this United States of America.....then perhaps you should read what each of your states have written about the separation of church and state.
I am grateful that I lived in the time when I was taught religion in school..
Perhaps the world would be a better place if they still did.

For those of you that will give me a thumbs down for this....what I learned in school is my reward and I will just consider the source.
