is it because people that make less money are bitter of those who make more?

I still think there are some people out there who go into a particular field because they are really passionate about something. Some people, like a couple of social workers I know, could be working in private practice and making a fortune, however they aren't just in it for the money. These people are in the social work field because they truly want to help people who are less fortunate and need help.They don't make much money but love what they are doing. I do agree, however, that these days most people are in it for the money. I think it has a lot to do with what your priorities are.For instance. I was in the military and loved it. The military won't make you rich but do provide good benefits and I enjoyed my job as a crew chief on F-16's. Each person follows their goals for either ione or the other or both. The luckiest people make good money and enjoy their jobs. I think there aren't a lot of people who you hear say that they love what they do. The bottom line though is that we all need a paycheck to survive.

Volunteers do it because they want to, no money involved. I have far more positive effect from working as a volunteer for my favourite Charities than I do from my 'well' paid fulltime job.
I work because I want to, not just for the money. Sometimes I wish I had chosen a less high volume stressfull environment profession. On the whole I enjoy doing what I do and being paid to do it is a bonus.
Few people are 'bitter of those who make more' as those who make more need to make more still. And those on the smaller income recognise this and so get on with their life outside of their work in the main.

Money sits on the list of priorities somewhere for everyone. People who are in it for the money tend to have it higher on the list than others and will do more extreme acts to get it.

Since you placed this question in the Psychology section;

Perhaps so that they will not feel any guilt for whatever it is that they are doing for "money" and/or that they need to keep reminding themselves that they should not be emotionally involved with the job.
