Waterseal may only last a year or two but will work. If you use paint you will have to apply on ALL sides especially the bottom next to the ground, other wise the wood will absorb moisture and be trapped in the wood and rot.

NO, NO AND NO! water seal makes objects more water resistant than water proof! and its only good for about a year max and has to be re-applied!! A good paint job will last several years. so you can not spray on a coat of seal and get the same results as a coat of paint!
