Elite schools are tough to get into because many thousands of students are trying to get into a few hundred slots. At Harvard this year (according to a recent NY Times article) over 22,000 excellent students applied and the Freshman class will only be about 1400.
But once you are in the school, it is not impossible to get a good GPA. First, because, they wouldnt let you in if they didnt think you could do the work. Second, because the kind of person who gets into these schools is smart, hardworking and responsible.
It's true that in the whole USA many students drop out of college without finishing, but that is DEFINITELY not true of the elite schools. At Duke, Stanford, Chicago and the Ivies very few students drop out for academic reasons -- probably no more than 1 to 2% at most. They all have extremely high % of their students who graduate in 4 years. Of course, they would since the students are so smart and dedicated.
The hardest part of these schools is getting in. Once you are there, they have every possible reasource to make sure that you are able to do the work needed to succeed.

At best, only a third of those who start college, finish.
There may be a variety of reasons for this, but grades is certainly one of them.
