Although I am male, my mom named me Alexandra rather than Alexander because she preferred the spelling and the way the name sounded.

Growing up, I hated having the female spelling of my name, although I mostly went by Alex or Lex anyway. but I always assumed I would change it when I was old enough.

But now I am old enough and I am having second thoughts because my mom really doesn't want me to change it and I think it would really upset her.

What do you think I should do?

I think it is entirely your decision! If its worrying you so much that its becoming a massive issue in your life then you should change it, and although your mom might be upset if you explain why I'm sure she will understand! However, remember that kids can be unkind and use anything thats a little different to use as a bullying tool, but in the adult world no-one really cares about theese things and actually its quite cool to be different. I think that the spelling of your name is nice and its unique and its what makes you, you. Like you said, you call yourself Alex or Lex anyway! I hope you come to a decision that feels right for you!

I can imagine in school the name must have been a pain. Your grown up now and for the most part the people you associate with aren't going to make fun of your name. If they do it only makes them look more childish and stupid for even teasing you.
I would keep the name at least for a couple more years so you can see if it still seems such a big deal in the adult world. I am glad that you are thinking of your mother's feelings and not just jumping into this name change.

Do whatever you really want to do. If you really don't want to be Alexandra anymore and would rather be alexander then by all means do what makes you happy. You will be living with the name for the rest of your life and you will have to deal with whatever reaction you get from people. If you do decide to change it just level with your mom about how you feel. Good Luck with whatever you decide.

Yeah well it really upsets you to have a female name too. Yes you should change your name, that's just horrible to do that to a boy.

I know you don't want to upset your mom but explain to her how bad it upsets you to have to go by that. I'm sure she'll understand. My parents named me Crystal Michelle and I hated it all of my life most everyone would say "Michelle my bell" and god I couldn't stand it... Or they would say "Hey Crystal, how come your not see-thru" omg... so I went and changed my name to something I love, it was final Nov 2006, my name is now Kourtney Danyelle.

My parents were a little upset for a while, b/c they did give me that name but now they accept it because they just want what makes me happy.

Talk to her and see if she will agree to one or the other:1. Let you pick a totally different name. 2. Put "Lex" or "Alex" PERMANENTLY on all of your papers. Explain to her, if you haven't already, that the spelling makes you uncomfortable. At least you don't have the first name of a Polish doctor I was recommended to see: Alexis ( a GUY).

It shouldnt be that big of a deal man. If you truly hate it when people refer to you as alexandra, which i would imagine would not be that often, unless in a business setting or what have you, then you probably go by your shortened name anyways.

If you truly want to change it, just do it to make yourself happy. you are the one that has to live with the name for chrissakes! Tell your mom you love her but its got to be Alexander. Either that or tell her she has to change her name to Randy if you have to keep your name alexandra! lol. good luck to you man!

I don't really think it's that big a thing. I think Alex is a really cute name...even kinda sexy. If you hate the long spelling, just don' t use it.
My name's Christina, not Christy, but I hate it so I go by Christy. It's on my checks, my mail, and I go my Christy at work. The only thing Christina is on is my social security card.
I don't think it's worth it to change it, but it's your name, and you have to decide that for yourself.
Good luck ,Alex.

Just go by Alex. I can understand why you would want to change the name though. Alexandra is a girls name.

to not offend your mother but still be recognized with a masculine name, try common spelling. my common spelling is nikol, but my real name is spelled differently. I only use the legal spelling for just that, legalities. other than that, even my signature is "nikol." and my mom was not offended at all. I wanted to change my name as soon as I turned 18( most girls wouldn't like the name nicoli), but I respected my moms wishes and now no longer have to deal with everyday snickers from friends or coworkers.( and you thought yours was bad, try having your best friend call you ecoli in a public place, or having your boss go," ummmmmm, ms. kinsley....")

You know, I think you should change your name if that's what you really want! See, if you feel uncomfortable any time you spell your name, do something that you would feel better! :) I have such problem like you and I believe it's much better to change your name and be happy then have your old name and feel uncomfotable about it. GOOD LUCK!!!!!
