No, but it really depends on your attitude and mentality when you work with the customer. If you take it all personally, or do not possess the willingness to help (even if you are faking the "friendly" attitude), then you are not cut out for the position anyway and will not last long.
It can be an extremely rewarding job. If you think about it, almost ALL jobs require a level of customer service in some way or another.

Don't ever let anyone tell you, at any job you have, that you are not in the customer service business. Every person should ask, "who is my customer?" and then should try to serve that person in their work as best as possible. This kind of attitude leads to real job satisfaction, no matter what a person is doing!
So, no, I do not find that demoralizing at all. .. it is quite encouraging in fact.

Customer Service can be a very rewarding job if you can handle criticism and are willing to do what it takes to make the customer happy...and can accept that some people will never be happy. Any person who has a difficult time dealing with criticism or people should find a different job.

Not at all! Good Customer Service people can make or break a business. Where would we be without them?

No. You can put a positive spin on it. Those uptight, snotty nosed people, who think they are better than you, get treated just like every one else. And if they try to put you down by abusing you, you just give them a big smile and say " have a nice day '.
