The income for families in 2005 had a median (half more and half less) of $56,194 and a mean (average) of $73,304. This is larger than for households ( number usually used by the census) because households include single people living alone so there are more households with only one worker. What is high and low depends on who you ask, so here is the distribution of household incomes ihttp://www.visualizingeconomics.com/2006/11/05/2005-us-income-distribution/
You can make your own judgments about high and low. The official poverty level depends on household size. For one person it is about $10,000 and for a ten person household about $40,000.
There are numbers just out for 2006, but the are not much different from 2005 numbers.
