If you start from seed it will take years and years. As suggested juniper is an excellent starter for bonsai beginners. Very easy to work with.
Naturally stunted plants are preferable to bonsai. If you have any wooded areas near you, go for a walk and look for trees or shrubs that are small and stunted. good luck

All the advise about not using seed is TRUE. Don't mess with seeds, but get a tree that has been established for a few years. Make sure you know the difference between and indoor and outdoor tree. Too many people try to grow an outdoor tree inside, and it will only last about 6 months before it dies. You might want to read more on my Bonsai Care page on:

It is best you start with the small plant of bonsai rather than seeds.

buy a small plant in a 5 inch pot. Juniper is easy and looks good.Unless you want something very special, give the seeds a miss.

That's gonna take a while. Why don't you start with a young juniper instead? You can start training it immediately.
