Yes. You have to fill out all kinds of medical history and all the usual stuff, along with a privacy act. Therapists are bound by their oath and the law to keep everything that is said in their office in complete privacy. The only way anyone can get access is by subpoena and a court order.

I believe there is an automatic law about confidentiality now. None of your information can be given out to anyone without your written permission. Not even to your spouse, children, or parents.

I work at a substance abuse treatment facility. Incoming patients are advised of their HIPPA rights upon admission. Signed permission has to be obtained for each person/entity to whom any disclosure will be made. Our staff cannot even confirm of deny the presence of a specific individual within the program if someone calls for whom we have no written release. This includes family members, even if they were the ones who brought that person in.
