I'm going to have to back up Max up there. Under the Articles of Confederation there was no defined executive branch, let alone a president. The "President of Congress" was essentially what we would call the Senate majority leader.

John Hanson was the first U.S. President. He was voted into Congress in 1781. He was booted out of office when the nation couldn't pay the revolutionary soldiers.

This is actually an interesting question. Many claim it was George Washington, but he was only the first President under the new Constitution. The United States had technically existed before that.

Some sources say George was our ninth or eleventh president!

George Washington, and don't let anyone convince you of anything differently. John Hanson was president of congress under the Articles of Confederation, not President of the United States. There were others who who were president of congress under The Articles of Confederation. They have been mistakenly credited as being Presidents of the U.S.
