within one of the rare occasions a visitor or yourself has gone into the home, the claw could've been picked up in the tread of a shoe outside (like a stone) and then dropped onto the carpet. simple... problem solved.

It's possible that the claw was caught in a visitor's clothing and fell off in the home...

When cats sharpen their claws on your furniture or leg, they sometimes shed the outer surface of a claw, leaving the next layer inwards exposed, nice and sharp.
From there, eh. Who knows.

Nothing is what it seems. The visitors you saw weren't humans and the claw the floor is actually belonged to a lion. :-).

In California, they put out insect traps so they can track fruit fly and other pest populations. Once, after returning from travelling back east, a friend of mine stuck a dead firefly in one (fireflies don't live in California). He did this to freak out the guy who checked that trap.
He'll always wonder "how?".
You are the victim of the same prank.

I too have no pets and yet find animal things in the home. I came to the conclusion that i've picked them up while walking, let me tell you that everything gets stuck on the shoe when outside.
