Most of the time, yes! The best Mexican food in this city is a tiny hole in the wall, really unadorned, but the food is cheap and incredible and the platters are huge! There's another tiny hole in the wall Mediterranean cafe type place where the interior is shabby-ish, but the falafels and gyros are amazing. And they're all kind of hidden off the beaten path of downtown. You have to know where you're going to find them, or live here. I doubt the tourists ever go to either of them.

In our little town, the best places are still run by a family... which means the family might still eat there.. so they serve favorites. The same familys have owned the "out of the way restaurantes" for so many years that we even call them by the family names and not the yellow page names.
Because of living in the same area for years and years I have watched the families grow and the businesses grow. Sometimes branching out, sometimes just getting bigger at what they do best. It is part of life in the slow lane and such a comfort to dine in a place "where everybody know's your name"...

9 times out of 10. It is amazing how much harder you try when you have the bottom line in your mind. All the chains have employees that could care less if the company makes money, i.e. provides good customer service and a high quality product. I love the Mom and Pops shop. They care!!!!!!!

Many small places are family run. Most of the food is home st lye cooking. Some of the best meals I have had have been in these places too. Probably the best are these small, hole in the wall Mexican food places. They make REAL Mexican food ! ! !
