Sorry, but cage bars are simply the most fun thing to chew on!

Don't be depressed if hammy doesn't use all the lovely toys you bought her from a pet shop - animals are just contrary like that! So long as she's eating and appears lively, you probably have nothing to worry about. I think you'll find if you just chuck her an empty toilet roll she'll like that best - also make sure there's a wheel in the cage, a rodent's favourite toy!

Bar chewing is not good for their teeth. They can break a tooth off and will ned to have the vet clip the other tooth down to the other tooths size, if not it will grow uneven and right into the head, killing them. There are products like Apple Bitter that can be sprayed on the wire to try to get her to stop. My son, who assists me with our rescue, is in charge of most of the hamsters and he will tap on the cage and say a sharp NO to them at the same time. We also try to provide a paper towel or tiolet paper roll for each cage. They love chewing on them. Some do it though when they want attention, a new paper roll food, or a treat. A little word of warning to keep her healthier: don't feed carrots, corn, peas or any treat with sugar, corn syrup, honey, etc all of these if fed can lead to your dwarf getting diabetes. Any kitchen food given must be free of artificial flavors, colors, garlic, onion powder and onions. If you are inerested in a food list for dwarf hamsters email me through my profile and let me know which animal you have, I have lists for other small animls also.

Hamsters teeth grow, they need something to shew on. Buy her wooden toys. As for the not playing part, most hamsters are lazy. I know mine were.
