Swimming reacts different to different people. I loose a lot of weight during my swim season because we burn much more calories than we can consume. But if you are not doing a highly strenuous work out some people will actually gain weight for a few reasons. One is that swimming increases your level of certain hormones due to the combination of anarobic and aerobic workout at once which can change your metabolism. Also, this can cause for your appetite to increase more than other excersizes so you end up eating more than you burn. But i would day for the most part that no, it does not increase your weight, unless it is muscle.

If you swim properly you will gain muscle weight. If you swim PROPERLY for about 1 hr without stopping every workout 3 times a week you will not gain weight. When I say properly, I mean if you are doing freestyle you catch the water and pull it for a complete stroke. A lot of swimmers never start trying to do this, so they never get anything out of the workout. The stroke is important. It is just like doing a pushup. It is hard to do it right. If you keep working on doing it right, eventually you can combine a whole bunch of RIGHT pushups together which will create muscle.

Hey!! As a lifeguard I don't think swimming makes u gain weight. I'm in a competitive swim team and if u are gaining weight is due to the amount of muscle u are building up. Muscle is heavier than fat so that's where the gaining weight comes in from and if u do gain weight it's a few pounds like 1 to 3 not a lot. The water temperature does not have to do anything with gaining weight whatsoever. Hope I answered ur question=)

If you have to swim for a school gym class I would not be worried. Whatever you guys do in that class is not going to make you gain weight. On the other had, if you were to join a swim team you would gain muscle.

I've Done Competive swimming for years i started out doing it for a regular team then when i got old enough to join my school swim team i switched. If anything it help me keep in shape, not gain weight the water is cold so that we go faster.

no i was told that you will loose a couple of lbs when you first start swimming and then start gaining some lbs but the lbs will be muscle. if you eat healthier like eat a salad for lunch w/ a apple and you wont gain any weight. and try to do 60 minuters of swimming or other excercise and you won't gain any weight

no. swimming does not make you gain weight. it is the best exercise for anyone & everyone. swimming for 30 minutes a day keeps you fit. and swimming in cold water is actually better training than swimming in warm water.

Most swimmers I know are thin and muscular. What you said may be true , but perhaps it happens when the swimmer gets older? And swims far less times than in their younger days.
If you are swimming in cold waters, use a wet suit or a dry suit to insulate your body.
