Some artists (especially musicians) have a heightened state of mental images - feelings, emotions, meaning, strength and stuff. When they see the normal world, they find something lacking. They try to create something to make something match what is in their head.
Example, I have a simple useless life right now, with no heartfelt love and the girlfriends I had were like, "yeah, let's go and hang out on the lake until we are bored". In my head I want to feel this great love and it doesn't seem to be out there. So, what do I do? I sit and fantasize a great love story. I may write a poem or would want to make a movie to live that moment in my head.
And then again, I think I am just stupid as I can't live in the real world and be satisfied - not saying that's the case with you, please note.

Your reason to start poetry might be because you fall in love and wish to write how you feel to your new friend.
You may be required to write a poem in English class.
You may just feel like creating a poem for the fun of trying. You may discover that you are very good at it and get them published. I'm proud to say I have one published in a book of poems, called "Chit Chat With An Ant." . There are websites that encourage poetry and you can win awards for first, second and third place. You can maybe make some money if you are good enough to publish your work. No one says you have to write except maybe your teacher, but it is a another way to express yourself. I did,and I do. Rev. Poetry is so versatile in it's mode of expression and the holistic path of release that it provides for overwhelming emotions, thoughts, and beliefs. It also acts as a mirror to your soul, everything you are consciously and, once in the flow, unconsciously. Poetry is a raid on the inarticulate and thus the language of the soul. What better reason would one want? Perfect expression, completely infallible self-knowledge, and the exuberance of morphing meanings and phrases into evolutionary prose that can trigger epiphanies and transformation in yourself and others.

Writing in any form, whether it be poetry, fiction, observations, etc, is a form of releasing ones creative juices. This person may have wanted to try this form of expression for a long time or has tried it before and put it away. Writing allows people to think freely, organize or make sense of their thoughts. Writing actually is quite satisfying to some, and sometimes poetry allows shorter and concise words of description to explain things or allows one to be elaborate and flowery in their thoughts. Encourage them.

One reason could be a love of language, the challenge of "forming it" in some unique way or evoking a certain emotion. My Father is good at that. He is a poet. Was part of a radio show out of Fayetteville State university for years. But my Mother ...she is the one with the Masters in English, cant write a decent poem at gunpoint....laughing
But my Father, he has the talent for the language. He has the ability to make it "art". Even though he almost failed english in school. Cant spell.....but he knows his own heart. Apparently, that's enough...smiling.....everybody loves his work locally.

Poetry is a good way to express a part of yourself that you otherwise wouldn't be able to, like everyday conversation..
It's been said that poetry is the window to the writer's soul -- when you look into a poem you can see into the writer of the poem's soul and real being.

Many people can play music, but only a few can write music. The same thing is true for poetry. It's a gift. You either have it, or you don't.

when a person finds wonder in nature. let's say love. a person is so overwhelmed with the complexities of love, that he is in awe. he writes about it, as how he sees it, how it inspires him.
poetry is like prayer. you write something as thanksgiving to the Higher Being for letting Him reveal to you the wonders of nature. :)
