I'm a 27 year old male who still reads comic books. I picked them up when I was about 11.

Let's see. I do happen to live in a basement, but it's furnished, and it's in a house I rent about 350 miles from where my parents live. It tends to be cheaper for us MA students to rent houses together. I'm not delusional (about comics), I don't live in a fantasy world where I have super powers. I don't tend to get taunted and belittled now. I did get some of that in high school, but I didn't let it bother me, and it wasn't because I read comics. It was mainly because I didn't play a sport or drink beer, but most of that stopped when I went out for the tennis team, though I never really picked up beer drinking until I became an archaeologist. Later this year I'm getting married, and the young woman I am engaged to happens to be a former athlete, and she does not read comic books.

Life is good!

I read comics for the same reason I read novels and professional journals. I find the stories anywhere from interesting to captivating, and I enjoy a chance to look at things with a critical eye. I don't think I've actually ever met anyone like the people you're describing.

Well here is the thing,

If you are and adult reading comics for entertainment and a bit of escapism that is fine.

If you are reading it as a solution for your problems then there is a problem, with yourself.

Then again this is not just unique to comics, this applies to everything from being a sports fan to a rock group groupie.

The nerd part of your question though, I'd say that would come into play if you try to force your hobby onto those who are just not interested, being a nerd to me is being someone who misses those little social clues that spell the difference between fitting in and not.

Not really. I'm a comic book reader (female, married, own my own home and work in computers) and this doesn't describe any of the comic book readers I know. Most of my friends who read comics are like me - married or in committed relationships, work in the computer field, own their own homes, make decent money, and have pretty normal lives. Some have kids, others even have grand kids. Overall we're more educated than the general public - most of the adult comic book readers I know have MS or Ph.D or multiple BA/BS degrees, and I'd say that in general we all read more than most people, so maybe it's just that we have better imaginations and enjoy them.

The majority of comic book readers don't fit the traditional stereotype. Then again, that's true of practically every group that's stereotyped.

hell no!!!
comics are just illustrated stories, it is in someway, considered art too and it shouldn't be taken as just kids merchandise (good plots, semi naked girls for example??)

I'm 25, not a huge comic fan but I enjoy some X-men from time to time, good stories, good plots, good graphics. AND I have a job and a girlfriend!!

It has nothing to do with accepting reality. You know comics are not real, they're just fun.

no. i like comics and science fiction and I am a very useful person, I also fantasise apout women I can't have because I am married. If aI didn't accept reality, I wouldn't be able to be a computer controlled machine designer. also I am married for 45 years and my wife raised two very sweet successful daughters.

I used to collect the comic 'Warlock & the Infinity Watch' in my teenage years & probably still would if it had not ended. I don't think that I had lost the touch of reality but a good way to past the time.

Ive knows a few of those types and they accept reality perfectly. The comics they read are just for entertainment. However there are some but very few people that completly do what you said because they are a little too into their hobbies. *cough* jerk *cough*

No ones really too old to like someone thats unreal. I mean, we all have fantasized once in a while. Of course, they could be going obsessed and get on your nerves, but come on, cant they have a little fun? You have to grow old physically, but your mind still stays a kid no matter how hard you try. Just a smarter kid. Those men probably just want to play around and have fun. I mean, im a girl who loves the show Naruto and sometimes me and my friends role play a bit just for fun or to let off some steam.
