Why are red wolves endangered?
Red wolves nearly became extinct due to:
1) loss of natural habitat, as the land that they needed was appropriated by humans for human needs;
2) being killed in great numbers by humans, especially in predator control programs;
3) increased susceptibility to disease as their numbers decreased; and
4) hybridizing with coyotes.
If you have any other questions about the red wolves... this source link has many other frequently asked questions and provided answers to those questions to satisfy your curiosity.
Hope this helps!!!

Threats to Surival: Three problems threaten the future of red wolves - the loss of habitat, the hunting of wolves, and red wolves mating with coyotes. The expansion of agriculture, logging and human settlement cleared the forest home of red wolves. Between 1900 - 1920 red wolves were hunted because they preyed on cattle. As the population of red wolves declined, coyotes expanded into its territory.
Today the red wolf population is at 300 captive animals in zoos and captive breeding facilities. Red wolves have been reintroduced at the lligator River National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

When the few remaining red wolves were unable to find mates of their own species, hybridization with more abundant coyotes did occur. This hybridization is generally accepted as the final factor that................ resulted ..............in the near extinction

unfortunately there are not that many left in the wild and therefore as a species it needs to be saved,some kind of scheme has been tried to put wolves back into the wilderness but it has been met with conflict from farmers.losing the wolf would be a tragedy as it really is one of a kind and nothing comes close to it. wikipedia seems quite good for info.
