i know removing it is illegal but i was just wondering...

You mostly likely wont do any good for your engine, the cat is in place to create some back-pressure your engine needs, if you remove this back-pressure you lose performance. Its better to just buy a less restrictive cat, but you really dont need to. Just install a nice Cat-Back and Headers to increase exhaust flow and performance.

if your car has an O2 sensor behind the cat, your engine light will stay on all the time. it really wont help any, the bottleneck in most cars today is the fuel delivery system and/or the valvetrain.

i wouldnt do it if i were you.

if it is clogged it will run better but something made it clog so have a test run on ur car. if you do cut it off don't let the repair place keep the old one. find a recycle center and they will buy it from you. some GM are worth $50.00 - $100.00

Yes, many people remove them for improved performance but, like you said, it is illegal. But, if you don't have inspections in your area, go for it.
