… because moms caring for the kids isn't funny - that's everyday real life!
The mom dies so the dad is left as the bumbling caretaker "fish-out-of-water" scenario. It also makes the father a sympathetic character and the mother a fond memory; rather than having the bitter undertones of dysfunction that leads to divorce (again, that's real life and unfunny).

To the first answer....the only reason the dad died is because he ACTUALLY DIED.....
Most people are more emotionally attached to their mothers, so if a mom dies in a show, people can understand the emotions better....a dad dying could bring up memories of a parent who abandoned them....not good for ratings....
Its allways been this way...moms die, the dads are the ones who leave.....at least on tv...

one thing, dads trying to be motherly can get pretty funny
second, it allows television to show dad's more.. caring side cuz i don't know, but it always seems like the dad figure is work and the person who earns money to raise the kids, and so if the mom is still alive, then that means she'd have to work more and you wouldn't see her too often (because she's out to work and since you're used to seeing her care for kids it won't seem like any big changes) but if the dad was alive, you'd see him at home more often

It is a common fact that a child loves his/her mom more than dad. To play on the emotions of the viewers they tap the child in you and make the mom pass away and get your desired attention. So you see its hitting you where it hurts, and where it hurts it is remembered.

probably because people believe that the mother is a better suited caretaker of the family and without the mother people would want to see if the father could cut it running the house hold

It's because everybody knows that's alot harder for dad's to live widowed, especially with children to take care of, than women.

The theme of the motherless child is classic. Fairytales are full of that particular storyline. It's time tested.

because generally it is the mother that does the majority of care taking of children, and it makes for good story telling if the father has to learn how to do her "job"
