It's funny to see the anti-Japanese bias. It all was probably written on a computer made in China.
Anyway, quality is engineered, not built, so it would not matter where the Altima was built. Just buy the car that suits your needs.
As far as being an American car . . . no, the Altima is a Japanese car. It's a car whose design and engineering is based on Japanese culture. Likewise, just because Chrysler is now owned by Germans doesn't mean that it has lost any of its American character because the 300 is purely American in so many ways.

All Altimas are built in TN. They were developed in America at Nissan California design studio. They are built by Americans with many American component suppliers. But They are based in Japan and affliated with France based Renault. If you want a Japan built vehicle the Acura TSX might be worth a look.

I think the term Japanese or American usually refers to the company that makes it, though you'd expect a Nissan (or any other Japanese car) made in America would be an Americo - Japanese. They make Jap cars in Australia too - Mitsubishi. Some Jap cars (sold in Japan by Japanese companies) are actually made in Australia to Japanese designs using lots of Japanese parts. So, are they Jap cars or Aussie cars? Beats me, I drive a MAZDA 1 - Tonne van.

I, for one can only assume that the Japanese came over and bought the land to build on and set up shop in America(for a nominal fee, of course).
I wonder if they have a 1-800 number you can call at the TN manufacturing plant; that would probobly be a good place to start. I live in TN as well; and this is somewhat curious to me as well. Good Luck! =)
