What does it eat? Not most veggies, and it does not eat fruit.
What it DOES eat is a mix of turtle pellets and 'fish food' like live or frozen/thawed insects, worms, shrimp, krill, etc. A good diet will avoid the danger of soft shell, usully caused by too little calcium.

Others have given you nice guides on how to care for your new pet. Turtles = reptiles = ectotherms = need very specific thermal conditions. Be sure to get 2-3 thermometers in the tank and be prepared to spend a long time monitoring temps and getting them right. Reptiles need to have their temps right in order to digest food. Not right, the food will rot in their gut and kill them.
The one thing I really wanted to say though- PLEASE do not release your turtle. Once an animal has entered captivity, it cannot be released under any circumstances. You could be responsible for killing an entire population of native turtles (even many different species).
Please see this web page for more specifics:
http://www.parcplace.org/DontTurn.pdf
Also, go to:
http://forums.kingsnake.com/
and look at all the turtle forums- they have a much better Q and A on taking care of turtles. Lots of details there- all to help you with any problem you may have- lots of knowledge on those forums.
I hope some of this heps and you get into a better relationship with you new pet.
Good luck!!!

There is a lot involved with caring for a turtle, here is a useful guide to this breed. They are not easy to care for, and do require special care. They also can have intestinal parasites or other problems if they did not come from a responsable breeder. If you have trouble still after changing the diet to as recommended in this article, see a vet. He may be sick and need medicine. Best of blessings,

Why do so many people get turtles and nobody ever knows how to care for them?
Red Ears are a pain to keep anyway.
They are are carivores, feed them insects and small fish like feeder guppies when they are small and then feed large crickets and feeder goldfish as they get bigger. Make sure it eats a variety of bugs/fish, some of them will eat ghost shrimp too.
