Try Terro. It works for pissants and wood-borers that get on my peach trees. It's just boric acid in sugar syrup, but they can't resist it. Otherwise, get an exterminator. Carpenter ants can do a lot of damage to a house.

ANT BAIT
You'll find it effective, but be patient -- it may take a week to 10 days to be fully effective.
In the meantime kill ants in the house with Windex or another ammonia-based cleaner. Clean and kill, all in one motion.
Recipe:
1 part 20 Mule Team Borax or Boric acid
9 parts of a sweet sticky liquid like maple syrup, honey or Karo syrup
Mix the ingredients. Heating in a double boiler may speed the process. Take an empty margarine tub and poke 4 holes around the bottom edge (entry holes for ants to walk in).
Place a dollop the size of a quarter in the middle of the tub, then put the top back on. This mixture is not non-toxic, however it is less toxic, and that's the key to its success.
The ants carry it back to the nest where they feed it to the entire colony and wipe out the nest.

There are chemicals that are sold for carpenter ants, but if they are anywhere near your house it is good to get a professional to deal with it, they can do a lot of damage fast.
Look in the nursery for a chemical that is specifically for carpenter ants.

YES! Spray "Skin So Soft" in the areas of your home where the Carpenters are frequenting. This product is safe to use on any surface including carpets. Those critters are attracted to damp areas like basements and bathrooms. I have been using this product for years. OH YES! It's also a super insect repellent for the outdoors person.
"Skin So Soft" is a product by Avon.
PS: Carpenter are harmless critters. However, they are a nuisance.

Carpenter ants are like termites - best left to the professionals. A few carpenter ants is not the problem it is where they have their nest that is the problem.

Ants can be a sign of a moisture problem. You might want to find out if you have one in the wood. And, then maybe try an exterminator.

i bought ant bait. I saw only a few. Many means there are nests probably in moist areas as in the shower walls under tile. The few I saw are attracted to the bait and bring it home to the nest. This way they die in their nest not in my home. If infested, you need an exterminator.

Not strictly to ansswer; just to give you an example of their destructive nature.
2 years ago I cut a tree to the ground. I never ground the stump. Yesterday I was able to remove the stump, by hand and it crumbled as I pulled up pieces, finding carpenter ants had done my job for me. I don't have a wood frame house, but certainly they should be attended to, either by a pro or some chemicals designed for the purpose.
