And if so how does a person break his television if he has very little will-power and has no intention of just throwing out all his TV's? What are some of the long-term consequences of severe TV-alcoholism, if it exists?

Well I think that addiction to television, the internet, and cell phones is a rising problem in the world today. As technology gets better, and cooler, people get more and more addicted. Take all of us Y!Answers folks, most of us just can't stop after answering 1 question.

Since there isn't a real "12-step" program for tv addiction yet, short of throwing out all your tvs, it's just going to take a lot of will power. If you don't have the will power, mabye someone else does. Try using a buddy system with someone who lives in the house with you. Have someone else monitor how much tv you are watching and remind you that you are trying to cut back or quit. Tell them to turn it off and take away the remote if they have to. If you live alone, find a reliable friend who can call once or more a day to check in with you and remind you of your addiction and your vow to try and stop it.

Long-term consequences are hard to judge but I'm sure that obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are definately among them. TV addiction helps increase this country's growing sedentiary lifestyle. We are becoming less and less active and are continuing to eat the same high-fat, high-cholesterol diets, with less exercise. Other long term effects are a skewed sense of reality. We are becoming more and more desensitised by what we see on television. Sex, drugs, and violence are becoming less and less of a big deal, and more of an everyday, been there done that thing to us.

im guessing you might think you are addicted to TV. Maybe you should go outside whenever you feel like watching tv. go for a walk. or call a friend or close family member. Do somethng you like to take your mind away from tv. But dont substitute it with watching a movie or going on the computer. Those are basically the same thing.

I agree w/ the person who said that it sounds like maybe you think that you're addicted to tv. Yes I think that there's such a thing. I used to watch so much tv but that wasn't cuz I was addicted to it...I just had nothing BETTER to do !!! :( If you don't plan on getting rid of your tvs then maybe you should put them in rooms where you know you DEF wouldn't watch tv. Like if you don't like to spend time in the basement maybe you could put it down there....just don't plug it in. Put it somewhere inconvenient. Maybe even make a little "mess" of things by moving things so that it becomes more of a "chore" to move all of these things just to be able to plug your tv in. If you know that it's too far away fr the plug in in the first place, (cuz you meant to put it that far) then you'd have to move the tv...right ? That kind of thing. Find something else that you enjoy. Go for a walk w/ someone. Join a group/club. Ask a friend for help. If someone knows that you're addicted to tv then they could help you to get out more & do things that you should be doing.

Long-term consquences: losing a job, sleeping in, missing appts &/or mtgs, not paying bills on time & then getting penalized for it (resulting in paying more), missing out on having a social life & isolating yourself fr friends/family just to name a few. Good luck. If you're talking bout yourself, I hope that this helped. :)

I think a person should always do something while watching TV(and throw in the internet)
A person's brain becomes neutral when watching TV and stops the brain from thinking
Basicily the brain stops thinking when a person is watching TV

Programming sucks so bad I can't see it being addictive. The commercials are newer than the shows & the reruns drive me nuts! If I wanted to watch something 20 years old, why do I need cable?!

Yes.

Get rid of the TV, or cancel your cable/satellite service.

Concequesnces: job loss, loss of any semblance of a real life, loss of friends, isolation...beginning to believe that the soaps are real, and that Jenny will actually get back together with Jimmy, and...well, nevermind... ;) lol

i think tv (and the internet for that matter) can be just as addictive and bad for you as drugs/smoking/drinking.
