Hi there. It depends on what you mean by "not fertile". If you are close to ovulation your cervix will be producing a fluid that will enable the sperm to live for 4-5 days. If you are not close to ovulation and your cervix is not producing this fluid the acidic environment of the vagina will kill the sperm in 2 to 4 hours.
Your odds of getting pregnant before you actually ovulate are better than AFTER you ovulate as the egg is only viable for 12-24 hours after it is released. So, you can see that the sperm that were "ready and waiting" will have a better chance of fertilizing the egg than ones that are just getting started at the time the egg is released.
It is not as easy to get pregnant as some people like to think it is.
In any case I hope you get the answers that you are looking for.
Good luck.

Yes, you could. Sperm has been documented as living up to 7 days inside a woman's body before. Most sperm will die off within 72 hours but some may survive. Therefore if you have sex on Monday, for example, and are not on a "fertile" day and abstain on Wednesday because you believe you are ovulating, you can still become pregnant from the sex you had on Monday. It's one of the main reasons why "natural family planning" has such high failure rates!
Best of luck!
Peace,
Jenn

Well, I'm 12 and a half and I still don't have my period yet (or boobs, for that matter), but from what I understand from Health Class and The Talk with Mom, you can get pregnant weather your fertile or not, just as long as you have your period, or are close to getting it.
