The title is a reference to a 1960's song (White Rabbit) by Jefferson Airplane that uses drug imagery from Lewis Carroll's Alice books:

One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall

I think the book is generally considered to be fiction now.

The book was named after the Jefferson Airplane song White Rabbit, which has the line GO ASK ALICE in it, regarding Alice In Wonderland. And, no, it's not a real diary of a young girl, it was written by a woman named Beatrice Sparks, who was I believe a psychologist.

And the Jefferson Airplane song is, in turn, an allusion to the scene in Alice in Wonderland, when Alice drinks three potions, one which makes her incredibly large, one which makes her small, and one which returns her to her normal size.
