I've tried fish photography, and it can be tough! Some suggestions I'd make for what you want to try and do:

1) get some males that have been kept separately from females - if you have a larger male to female ratio, they'll be even more attentive as they try and out-compete each other

2) set up a small tank with a divider - it can be clear, or just a piece of aquarium background in the water to limit the space they can occupy - about 2" from front to back max - it will make it easier to get them into focus

3) set up your camera on a tripod for the sharpest photos

4) add the male(s) to the tank first, so they get comfortable in their surroundings

5) add the females - while they're getting oriented, the males will be checking them out

6) snap away!
